Ayaana Publishing was set up to break, what we identify as, the ‘cycle of illiteracy’ in some of the Ethiopian languages: No one publishes books, so people do not read. And because nobody reads, a literature market cannot emerge and selling books does not become profitable and therefore no one publishes books.

Ayaana was founded in 2013 as a social enterprise and has since been publishing Siifsiin Magazine in Oromo and recently launched Dhugasho Magazine in Somali.

To help subsidise our literacy efforts we recently published the photo book Simiens and also offer our graphic design, publishing, video and photography services to third organisations.
